President’s Letter

September

Oh my goodness…..it’s September already !! Well this hasn’t been a very good year for me….and I also feel that I haven’t been a very good club President this year for you. I’ve missed a couple of meetings and haven’t had time to think up other club activities. Starting with Jan 1, a personal problem came into my life and hasn’t even been resolved yet …. probably won’t be resolved for awhile either.

In March I had my main vein removed on my left knee which was in the way of my intended left knee replacement. Then in April I had the left Knee replaced and for three weeks I was in rehab . The rehab wasn’t a bad place but the pain was bad. I had never taken pain pills in my life and they were giving me 20 mg of Percocet times a day. When I got out I realized I had become addicted to them so I cut them out and took a lesser pain pill that was non-narcotic, and thus I still had some pain. I had in-home rehab for 3 weeks and then went to outpatient rehab, even now.

Here’s the rest of the story … I believe one of the rehab machines put a strain on my lower back which then became inflamed. My pain was so bad, that I almost couldn’t walk. The only way I could walk was to bend halfway over with a cane and very small steps, stopping every 5 steps. Don’t even ask about going up and down curbs. Now if that wasn’t enough I started with Percocet and even took Morphine at the same time. Also muscle relaxers that made my whole body weak at the same time…

I went to a very well known surgeon who did 2 MRI’s , still didn’t know what was wrong with me, but wanted to operate anyway. Lucky for me, I am still very stubborn, so I went to a pain management Doctor and demanded a Cortisone shot … Damn thing hurt … But the pain has subsided , and I take only the non narcotic pill in the morning to get the sleeping back stiffness away. I have 2 more Cortisone shots to go, and I’m hoping that my back problem was just inflammation , and not anything more.

I want to thank the club, especially Jim Lynch for visiting me in the rehab a few times ( he brightened up my days ) and leading the meetings that I missed. …. the Greers, the Rauch’s, Joe Malaney for keeping the club together as Secertery, while I was not around, Lorraine and Barbara for the newsletter and blog, and Gerry Shapiro for calling me to see how I was doing. I look forward to seeing all of you at our annual Pizza Party on Monday, Sept. 20th at 5 pm on Siesta Key Beach. I also look forward to meet our new members, and all the rest of you again..

Lastly, I am off this Thursday to Auburn , and South Bend, Indiana to see the Auburn, Cord, Dusenberg show and the Studebaker Museum……Let’s hope my back and knee hold up….I’ll bring pictures I hope…

See you soon, Arnie Berns…Pres..
